Knowing I have a Relationship w| God
Today, I was posed with the question “How do I know I have a relationship with God?” I don't think I had ever been asked this question before, being asked this question I had an answer for it. Honestly, I was slightly surprised that I had an answer off the bat not because I thought I didn’t know; but because I have gotten to the place where I know my relationship with God is personal. I know because it has been developed based on my experience with Him; not tradition… Growing up I always wondered if I would get to a place where I could say I have a relationship with God based on my own experience (and I do). In all seriousness, it’s not usually the topic of discussion! Often, we don’t think much of it because we attend church service weekly, or we pray often if not daily, I mean we know we got saved at one point and we vaguely remember being baptized but most times it wasn't necessarily a choice, especially if we got baptized as children. It’s something that I don’t think many believers value anymore. Tradition and routine have a way of causing believers to just go with the flow without intention, and investing the time to learn and discover for themselves who God is and who He can be for us. Without an encounter, it can be difficult to decipher to others who our Father is and why we believe, and in that breath, it’s on us like any relationship to do the work to seek God for ourselves.
My relationship thrives on communication and quality time, my love language is staying connected and constantly wanting to learn more about God and who He is, which in turn allows me the safe space to learn who I am in Him. Spending time in His presence, reading His Word, and listening to His voice are all ways I stay in tune and faithful in the relationship. The space of vulnerability and freedom to be me fully, grow and evolve individually and spiritually at the same time is beneficial. It strengthens my walk with Christ and that alone may help someone else see the authenticity of my relationship. Our relationship with God will be different from the next person so we must be sure never to compare our relationship or our walk. The goal is to continue to pursue God the way he pursues wholeheartedly, this will honestly be the best relationship you ever have.
I rest in the security knowing that I have a relationship, there is promise, unconditional love, forgiveness, faithfulness, contentment, and assurance. There are so many things, good things that come with being in relation with The Father and it’s one of the many relationships that I value. Imagine being so valued by God and already coming into a relationship chosen from the jump that’s a huge “green flag” right?! God is constant; bringing accountability, guidance; He teaches patience, trust and brings understanding to the table. One thing we all want from our relationships is consistency, each person wants to give and receive, not for selfish reasons though. There’s an obligation to commitment, and investment so we aim to give our best, and fully show up for one another. In the same way, when we decide to submit and live our lives for Christ, He is obligated to bless us through our obedience. This will result in a working relationship in its purest form of love, and it’ll continue to flourish from our faithfulness. As one of the most important relationships in our lives, this one requires a different level of work sacrifice, and correction. A relationship in which we will never be forsaken by God, that’s the standard.
