The pursuit of Purpose
Do you know those moments when you wonder what your purpose is? Like God what am I really doing here… You had passions but you’re not so sure anymore if that’s the direction you’re supposed to be going in. I have found myself in this space before, and if I can be honest, I have experienced it pretty recently. These moments have led me back into a place of submission to God. I have had a full plate and still been unsatisfied and unsure if all I was doing was what God desired for me. Am I honoring God? In all of the distractions, I’m keeping myself busy. Personally, when I begin to ask this question, I have to take everything on my plate back to him. I never want to seek things more than I seek God, those idol things “gods” that we focus on such as work, people, and money have a way of distorting our vision and getting us off course.
There are dreams we aim to chase, goals to accomplish and we work toward them every day. Big things to check off our list, some of them we don’t even know why we want them or how they even apply to us. Working jobs, we don’t like, paying for seminars, conferences, and webinars, even starting every type of business for a quick dollar or namesake. All of this hardly ever works out the way we planned because we aren’t pursuing our purpose. We don’t often consider alignment because we are chasing desires, wealth, and lifestyle. “Many plans are in a man’s mind, but it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand.” (Proverbs 19: 21") What I get from this text is no matter what outline we create, our self-designed blueprint for life that we try to hand back to God, if it’s not in his plans and He’s not the foundation it’s a no… It goes back to “what does God get out of it?” We can be passionate about something that isn’t our purpose, but we don’t want to settle in chasing passions that we never pursue purpose.
Uncertainty of our purpose can lead to a life unfulfilled, wandering, and merely existing. Are we living or existing? In seeking God for guidance and direction we gain clarity on his will for our lives, how?! Through spending time with God in prayer, communing with Him, reading/studying His Word, and living it out. The reality: our passions and purpose are intertwined together, what would God give us that he can’t use and get the glory for?! He wants us to enjoy life, and it’s because he desires us to live fully, intentionally, and on purpose. Our talents, gifts, and treasures are all things that we enjoy and take pride in. We are gifted these things as they will make room for us in the end. Trust God with you, He’s already written the story you’re trying to rewrite. God is the author of our lives.
